To take back life, one must first face death...

One man stripped of his freedom, his morals...his life.

Conditioned in captivity to maim, to kill and to slaughter, prisoner 818 becomes an unremorseful, unrivaled and unstoppable fighter in the ring. Violence is all he knows. Death and brutality are the masters of his fate.

After years of incarceration in an underground hell, only one thought occupies his mind: revenge...bloody, slow and violent revenge.

Revenge on the man who lied.

Revenge on the man who wronged him.

Revenge on the man who condemned him and turned him into this: a rage-fueled killing machine. A monster void of humanity; a monster filled with hate.

And no one will stand in the way of getting what he wants.

One woman stripped of her freedom, her morals...her life.

Kisa Volkova is the only daughter of Kirill The Silencer Volkov, head of the infamous Triad bosses of New York's Russian Bratva. Her life is protected. In reality, its a virtual prison. Her fathers savage treatment of his rivals and his lucrative and coveted underground gambling ringThe Dungeonensures too many enemies lurk at their door.

She dreams to be set free.

Kisa has known only cruelty and loss in her short life. As manager of her fathers death match enterprise, only grief and pain fill her days. Her mafia boss father, in her world, rules absolute. And her fiancé, Alik Durov, is no better; the Dungeons five-time champion, a stone-cold killer, the treasured son of her fathers best friend, and her very ownand much resentedpersonal guard. Unrivaled in both strength and social standing, Alik controls every facet of Kisas life, dominates her every move; keeps her subdued and dead inside...then one night changes everything.

While working for her churchthe only reprieve in her constant surveillanceKisa stumbles across a tattooed, scarred, but stunningly beautiful homeless man on the streets. Something about him stirs feelings deep within her; familiar yet impossibly forbidden desires. He doesnt talk. Doesnt communicate with anyone. Hes a man beyond saving, and a man she must quickly forget...for both their sakes.

But when weeks later, out of the blue and to her complete surprise, hes announced as the replacement fighter in The Dungeon, Kisa knows shes in a whole lot of trouble. Hes built, ripped and lethally unforgiving to his opponents, leaving fear in his wake and the look of death in his eyes.

Kisa becomes obsessed with him. Yearns for him. Craves his touch. Needs to possess this mysterious man...this man they call Raze.

This was my guilty little secret read over Christmas.  Whenever I had a spare moment I would dip back into this book and inhale a few chapters at a time.

This story centres around three families, the Tolstoi's, Durov's and Volkova's  they form the Bratva, a Russian empire based in Brooklyn.  They have a place called The Dungeon where people come to cage fight with the best underground cage fighters, the winner is the one still left alive in the cage.  They fight to kill.

Alik Durov is the undisputed champion.  He is the son of Abram, the sole heir to the Bratva family fortune.  He is engaged to Kisa, he is obsessed with her and needs her in his life.  It is not a good obsession, despite his love for her he still fucks other women and treats Kisa like his prized trophy possession.

It wasn't always like this.  Back when they were young there was Alik, Rodian, Luka, Talia and Kisa.  Luka was  Kisa's boyfriend, since she was a young girl, they always had that unexplained but beautiful connection, both sets of parents believed they were destined to be together forever.  This all changed one harrowing night when Rodian was killed, Alik was injured and Luka was found covered in blood and holding the knife.

This completely changed things for all three families.  Alik was now the sole inheritance benefactor and he claimed Kisa as his betrothed, leaving her in a no win situation but to obey him and accept him as her future husband.  She feared and hated him.

"My life was safer with him if I acted the role of the perfect Bratva wife." - Kisa

A new fighter turns up at the family gym, determined to join The Dungeon.  He is seeking revenge on someone who did him wrong and will to fight to kill until his quest for revenge is satisfied.  His name is Raze.  Kisa finds herself inexplicably drawn to this fighter, he stirs all sorts of feelings inside her and she struggles to keep them under control.  Alik would kill Raze if he knew what was going through her mind whenever she was around him.

What is it about this crazy man that has her spellbound?

"I could feel him everywhere:  within my body, in my heart... in my soul" - Kisa

This is such an addictive read.  There are no hearts and flowers in this, at times, gruesome story of betrayal and revenge. Some of the scenes between Kisa and Alik had me seething with anger and revulsion but they are part of the story and need to be told.  Yet it also is a story about family, love and loyalty interwoven amongst the pain and heartache.  Tillie Cole has once again blown me away with her ability to write another gripping story that I could not put down.

I give this 4.5 stars
