He gave them a choice.

She took it.

He made her promise two years.

She should have known there was a catch.
First, I am going to address the ending of this book. I was unprepared for it. I don't know if it would have made it easier to digest or not had I been forewarned that there was a cliffhanger, but at least I could have made an informed decision on whether or not I wanted to read this book now or wait until book 2 was available. So, as much as I want to say it didn't affect my overall reading experience, it did. BUT, at the same time I would not say it swayed my rating one way or the other. I have read (AND enjoyed) other books that ended on a cliffy. But when you couple the ending with the other issues I had, this was a book I would say I liked but didn't love.
But before you get to the end, there is a whole book to get through. The synopsis for this book is very vague. You basically go into the story blind, having no clue who or what the story is about. When you begin reading, you meet a girl named Amara. She is an Iranian girl growing up in New York. Her family appears to be wealthy but as we all know, looks can be deceiving. No one knows of her father's gambling addiction and the burden it had placed on the family, especially Amara.

And thus begins Amara's journey and the lengths she is willing to go to, to save her family. This is also where I became confused a few times during the storyline. I don't want to spoil anything for anyone, but there does seem to be some inconsistencies in the plot. An example, Amara at one point states she tells her mother everything about what is happening, but then a few chapters later it almost seems like her mother has no clue. And I was also confused by Amara's acceptance of her fate. It seemed a bit odd on how well she adjusted to things.

Though I didn't love the book and did have some issues with the storyline, I did find it intriguing and it  held my attention for the most part. There were times that I did find myself skimming pages as things seemed to drag a bit. And I am not sure what it was but I never felt connected with the characters. While that is not important for some, it is for me. I want to feel the emotions the characters are feeling. And when I don't, it tends to affect my overall experience.

Not my favorite from this author by a long shot, but still interesting enough that I find myself invested enough to pick up the second book when it releases.

Review: Bang by E.K. Blair

Bang (Black Lotus Series, Book #1)
By: E.K. Blair
Add to Goodreads:
They say when you take revenge against another you lose a part of your innocence.
But I’m not innocent.
I haven’t been for a very long time.
My innocence was stolen from me. Taken was the life I was supposed to have. The soul I was born with. The ruby heart embedded in a life full of hopes and dreams.

I never even had a choice.
I mourn that life. Mourn the what-ifs.
Until now.
I’m ready to take back what was always meant to be mine.

But every plan has a fatal flaw. Sometimes it’s the heart.

**Due to the dark and explicit nature of this book, it is recommended for mature audiences only as some scenes may be particularly disturbing.**

My first reaction when I finished this book was...

"NO NO NO NO! It can't end like that!!! I have to know, no I NEED to know what is going to happen now!!"

Yep, you guessed it. There is a cliffy. But in defense of Ms. Blair, she is very upfront about the fact that this is book one of a series. So, I can't even be mad because I knew before reading it that I would left hanging. I just didn't realize how badly!!

This book is pure genius. I have never read anything even remotely like it. The twists and turns that Bang takes you on will leave you dizzy and disoriented! It will have you guessing until the very end as to where the author is going to take things. And even then, you still will be wondering what the heck just happened! I was seriously on the edge of my seat all the way through. And every single time I thought I had things figured out, another bomb would explode.

I don't know if I was supposed to like Nina or not, but I didn't. I tried REALLY hard to sympathize with her given all she had been through, but even by the end she didn't redeem herself in my eyes. I am hoping that changes in the next book because she is a character I really do want to like.

I am going to end things here. I know it truly isn't helpful but this is a tough book to review! The slightest thing could spoil the whole book for you and I definitely don't want to do that. This is one that you just have to read to experience and believe when I say, it is one you want to pick up ASAP!

Review: Covered in Coal by Silla Webb

Covered in Coal (Buried Secrets Series, Book 1)
By: Silla Webb
Genre: Contemporary Romance/Suspense
Release Date: March 18, 2014
Carly Jo Simon believed that Colton Weston was her future, but he shattered her heart into tiny pieces. Just like any little girl would, she assumed her daddy would always be by her side. Unbelievably, he turned his back on her when she needed him most, leaving her with no one in her life to turn to for support. Without options, Carly runs away from the only home she's ever known, leaving behind her heartache and the betrayal of the two men she loved most.

Seven years later, Carly reluctantly returns to Kentucky. Her daddy is dying of cancer and Colton is nothing like the boy she once loved and left. After her daddy passes, Carly must uproot her life in South Carolina and take control of Simon Coal Company, where she has no choice but face the pain of her past.

Can Carly keep her secrets buried deep beneath the black Kentucky coal and her heart safe from the fiery Colton Weston?
At 17 years old Carly Jo discovers she is pregnant to her high school love Colton Weston, just days after he broke up with her.  She turns to her father for help, he pretty much disowns her and tells her she is on her own.  She leaves town and tries to make a life for herself with her impending baby.
Seven years later she returns home to reunite with her father as he is in his last days, dying of cancer.  After his death she finds herself the CEO of his Coal Mining company and one of her senior employees is Colton Weston, her first love.  All the familiar feelings for him come flooding back between them but they have both changed so much and their lives are paved with hurt, sorrow and what could have been regrets.
Colton wants her back and will not give up on them.  There are a lot or confessions to be made and both of them make silly decisions.  This leads you nicely into a cliffhanger ending BUT it’s not an awful one, more like a, ‘I hope it’s not true’ one.
I give this 4 stars J
Silla Webb is a Kentucky native, raised in the heart of the coal fields. A coal truck driver’s daughter, and a railroader’s wife, the coal fields own a special place in her heart.

When she isn’t conquering the world as a wife, momma and Super Woman, Silla loves to lay on the front porch swing and read while sipping sweet tea, just passin’ the day away.
