“You know the best thing about me and you,
about the difference in your black skin and my white skin? I can see your
beauty more than you ever will. I can tell you everything about it. Because I
watch it. Because I don’t have it.”
Kim Kind is the Assistant District Attorney in NYC aiming
for the number one spot. However a mistake in a recent case has her reluctantly
taking time off. During this time she meets King at a bar called Damaged Goods.
Kim admits that she is not down with the swirl, meaning she won’t date a white
man. Yet, there is something about King that has her gravitating to him.
“Somebody said you were looking for a
King.”
-King
Things quickly heat up between the two and neither are the
wiser. You see, both Kim and King have secrets. And their secrets will change
EVERYTHING.
My Thoughts
I struggled with this book a lot in the beginning
and I found the writing to be…subpar. For one thing the insta-love I was not really feeling
that. Kim and King barely knew one another yet they spoke of I love you. The
story lines itself had some interesting twists and turns but overall it didn’t
hit the mark for me personally. In fact it was not until King came on the scene
that my attention was actually held. I liked his character annnnd kind of wish
the book was told from his point of view instead of Kim’s.
Without spoiling anything I can say this, Hold Me In Contempt
dealt with some true to life issues abandonment, addiction, cheating,
betrayal and power to name a few. This is a good way to help readers connect to
characters but in this instance the writing style just did not fit my taste buds.
My Rating and Why
I gave Hold Me In Contempt 3 STARS because
somewhere around the 50% mark the story picked up, held my interest and fairly
entertained me. Overall it was ok, I didn’t love it but I didn’t hate it
either.
