"Without trust, we have nothing."
These are the words which have haunted Melanie Erickson for six years. When she walked out of the house Xavier Ross bought as their forever home, she thought she was closing that door permanently, but fate had other plans.
Xavier Ross tried to keep everyone at a distance until Melanie came into his life. The more he tried to fight his feelings for her, the more he fell in love. One rash decision fractured the trust that was essential to their relationship.
Six years later, she is the last person he expects to see walk through his front door. Will Xavier and Mel be able to learn to trust one another again so they can fulfill a dying woman’s wish?
Melanie was in a relationship with Xavier for a number of
years whilst she was studying nursing.
It was a Dom/Sub relationship but it was a committed live in loving
relationship. They had their share of
issues, mainly the control issue that Xavier had with her. It was this that eventually ended their
relationship, when Melanie left him.
Six years later Melanie is now a palliative care nurse and
arrives at her new assignment. She walks
up to the door of the house she once lived in with Xavier. Alyssa, his wife, is dying of cancer and
Melanie has been assigned to care for her in her last months of life.
"Will you be able to put aside any personal misgivings and focus
all of your attentions on my wife?" - Xavier
She quickly forms a bond with Alyssa and their gorgeous son
Jacob. Alyssa does not know that Melanie
is the girl that broke Xavier's heart all those years ago. Melanie feels really guilty keeping that from
her.
In her last days Alyssa asks Melanie to promise that she
will look after Xavier & Jacob after she dies. Can she do it though? She still loves Xavier and he still loves her
but he is completely grief stricken after losing his wife, whom he loved
deeply. He has no idea how he will go on.
It was just beautiful
to see how Xavier's bond with his son developed as they had to come to terms
with their new life without Alyssa. Jacob
has also grown so close to Melanie over the past few months and his attachment
to her only intensifies after his mother dies. Xavier is struggling with how he feels about
spending so much time with Melanie. How can
he feel so much for another woman when he not long ago laid his wife to rest?
"Maybe we were never supposed to be forever. Maybe we were supposed to be a stepping stone
to greater things in our lives; the perfect career for her and my beautiful son
for me" - Xavier
This was such a gut wrenching, emotional story about loss,
forgiveness and second chance love and I could not put this book down, it's a
freaking awesome read!
I give this 5 stars.
